ABOUT IYG
Mission & History
Creating safer spaces and empowering queer young people since 1987.
IYG (formerly Indiana Youth Group) is the oldest continuously operating organization for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults in North America. Since being founded as the Indianapolis Youth Group by Chris Gonzalez and Jeff Werner, who hosted small informal meetings in their living room, the organization has grown into a nationally recognized institution that serves thousands of young people across the state of Indiana and beyond each year. The name was changed just a few years after incorporation to Indiana Youth Group to reflect the commitment to all young LGBTQ+ Hoosiers. In 2024, the name was shortened to simply IYG, the monicker by which it had been more commonly known for over a decade.
Today, IYG continues to meet its original goals of creating safer spaces to build self-confidence, explore individualism, and develop friendships within the LGBTQ+ community. It also empowers queer young people, fostering their self-actualization and growth into thriving members of our community.
IYG promotes a space of acceptance, equity, and restorative practices. The organization also advocates for queer youth in schools, the community, and through family support services.
